You connect to your computer and upgrade through iTunes. Until you have iOS 5 installed there is no automatic upgrade facility on the iPad.
When I hook up to my MacBookPro, it does not see it.

If you have Snow Leopard do not forget the Additional Information paragraph.
Also, what version of iTunes do you have? You may need version 10.5 or later. Tiger on goes to 9.X.

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPad model allows

Open iTunes, select your device, click on Upgrade button.

If an update is available there will be an active Update button. If you are current,
then you will see a gray screen with a message saying your are up to date.
