Why the spinning wheel?

Every time I wish to attach a photo or video, when I click on iPhoto to attach my selection, I get the spinning wheel for hours. Same thing if I want to go from iPhoto to iDVD, when I begin I get the spinning wheel. I have the new version of iPhoto. This has been a problem since I bought my iMac in June 2009. Any thoughts?

Thank you...

No...it started importing photos and kept importing without a glitch. i stopped the import and this did cause this web page to freeze for a short time but then it was fine. The spinning wheel comes when you're in a separate application (like facebook; or evite) and want to attach/upload a photo. I click on iphoto and then I want to just select the photo, but this never happens as it just spins and spins. Eventually, after an hour or two, you are able to see your entire library and pick a photo to upload.

It also occurs if I go from iphoto to idvd. When I try to bring up my available pictures (load the iphoto library), the wheel comes.

If I go directly to iphoto just to look at pictures, there is never a spinning wheel.

I went to the Genius bar - they did a few tests and told me they would have to keep the mac for a few days. They ended up creating a new iphoto library. What is the best way to transfer the photos/videos from the old library to my new library? I was told I can drag photos, but am hoping there's a faster way as opposed to having to drag the photos and re-create the album names.

Thanks.

I was told I can drag photos,

From where? There is no place you can drag photos from (or too) that willnot cost you the edited version (and edit history) and a lot of metadata.

To move all of the versions, edit history and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager

Other than that: export from the old library (File -> Export) and note the settings in the Export dialogue. Then import to the new Library - but remember this will not get all the metadata and edit history.

So, best option: make a new Library from the old Library with iPhoto Library Manager's Rebuild command
