My Macbook Pro keeps freezing. Help!

Hi, I have a macbook pro mid 2010 model running OS X Lion 10.7.4 with 8GB of RAM (3rd party upgrade), 128 SSD. Up until about 3 weeks ago everything was running fine. Then one day the mac just froze and it's been doing it ever since on an irregular basis. Some days it will happen 10 times in one day, then it won't happen for 3 days.

Symptoms:

- The mac will freeze completely, no mouse, trackpad or keyboard input, if itunes is playing a song it will just hang and repeat the last 1/2 second of the song like a broken record. The only way out of this state is to do a hard reset.

- Occasionally I get some screen on startup that says I must hold down the power button to restart. It says this in about 5 different languages.

- Occasionally starting up the mac gets to the grey screen then doesn't move. Again I must do a hard reset.

Attempted Fixes:

- Booting up in safe mode does not fix the issue. It sometimes freezes in safe mode, or gets stuck on the grey screen.

- Apple Hardware Test - No issues found after running 3 times in extended mode.

- Verified/Repaired disks - Problem remains.

- Restored from a time machine backup. I didn't expect this to fix it, and it didn't.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing the issue, or any way to figure it out I am all ears.

Thanks,

Graham

Hi AceNeerav

Good luck with your mac. As for me I've decided no matter what happens after my current mac, this is my last apple product ever! I just don't rate apple's quality anymore. When a company grows too big it ends up cutting corners and downgrading its quality control in the bid to increase its profits - so we the customers suffer.

Agreed. I realized it the very hard way after 3 mbp replacements, 3 iphone replacements, 15 repairs of mbp, 1 ipod nano replacement, 5 earphone replacements. And now already my second gen airport express is acting gay.

I guess i was too awestruck with the apple and s. jobs pheomenon. It will be difficult adopting another eco system, but its an impending move.

May 21, 2013 12:30 AM in response to Vintage77

I turned on my Macbook Pro, (also think mine is a 2010 Series - Still Running Snow Leopard) instantly I went to chrome and googled "My macbook pro keeps freezing" because I am having the exact same issues as the original poster of this thread and what "Vintage77" said.

As I was reading Vintage's post, my Macbook Pro froze. So I held in my power button and restarted, once it started up, I went straight into Energy Saver Preferences and did what he did. (Un-Tick "Automatic graphics switching") and my Macbook Pro has not froze since.

Going from what Gman001 (Original Thread Starter) said, the sensor being at fault on the logic board. When the graphics try switching whilst on Auto, it seems to fail and cause your Macbook Pro to freeze.

So I advise you all to do what "Vintage77" Said.

It worked for me!

Jun 20, 2013 3:54 AM in response to Gman001

About 2 months ago my 2010 15 inch i7 MBP started to display the same issues. My screen would lock up, and the fans would go crazy. After a hard and legnthly restart it would be fine for a little while.

It does not matter if I'm running one application or ten. I found a free application that will stop the MPB from switching from the Intergrated Intel 3000 HD Graphics, to the much faster Radion. When I run with the Intel graphis I have no issues. Its a shame I paid an extra $800 for the 1gh Radion option 😟

I tried everything and finally decided to paste the console information and hoping that someone will be able to decipher it for me. Thank you.
