I have this same issue.  My Macbook is a mid 2010 unit. My problem mostly occurs on boot up.  The computer would just hang on the log in screen.  I would have to power down the computer using the on/off button.  The second or third time doing this I could log in.  I took it to the Genius Bar and they said it was a corrupt log-in issue.  Of course it would log in okay at the genius bar.  They did a complete wipe of my computer and did a fresh install of Lion, etc.  The next day the problem started again.  Somewhere I read the graphics card is the problem.  So I went to Preferences, Energy Saver and UNchecked the Automatic graphics switching.  After I did that I have had no problem logging on for the last 5 months.

That would OK if I have two graphic cards! I have MBP 13"

Freezing solved (at least in my case).

Well, I was Ok for a few days than it started again, even worse. There was no pattern, sometimes it was Chrome, sometimes iCal, mail but nothing that I could point to. I started rolling back the whole film and the only change apart from 10.7.4 update was my new SSD. Previously I had 60GB OZC agility 3 than I upgraded to Crosair Force 102GB and that was the reason.

Tonight after 1 hour of waiting several freezes to go away I decided to give a try to my old HDD (not really old, 4-5 months). Using Carbon Copy I cloned my Crosair to OCZ and result was instant. Typically I would have a small freeze on login screen but not any more. I tested using several apps at the same time such is Chrome running flash video, Parallels with W8, mail, Skype, iCal, iTunes, Safari and there was no freezing.

If you don't use SSD please ignore my conclusion. After I discovered cause of my problems I found that it's quite common especially with Crosair SSD

Good luck in your bug search.

Same problem mentioned in this thread, with different solutions... I'll add mine!

My MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) was full of rubbish, but running fine with Lion 10.7.3. Today I downloaded Lion 10.7.4 put it on a  USB stick and did a clean install.

After I'd installed Lion, I installed iLife '11 then did a Software Update. Everything was fine, so, next I installed Sophos. After a couple of restarts, I stated getting the spinning wheel and/or a complete freeze, then at the login screen the Mac told me I needed to turn it off.

I just wiped everything off and started again. This time I haven't installed Sophos and I haven't had a problem... yet... although after reading this thread, I'm worried about updating to 10.7.4...

Hopefully my problem was caused by Sophos 8 -- which I'll leave off for now...

I sure wish I had read this discussion before installing the 10.7.4 update. I'm having the same issues as everyone else. Screw Lion, I'm going back to Snow Leopard.

More bad news. I ran Snowleopard for a year or so without any trouble. I let the App Store update me to Lion and the freezes started. I went back to Snowleopard after erasing the disk and the freezes persisted. I don't know what to think of that.

I am having this problem too. I have downgraded to a simple 10.7 with no point upgrades and seems to be working OK.

So the culprit seems to be somewhere between 10.7 and 10.7.4.

Who would have thought that a company who produces so few models could write code that after a clean install of OS X Lion, & then the update, would cause such issues. I too am going back to Gingerbread & I wish I could backcharge Apple the $30 I spent. I'll be in the middle of surfing & my MBP will completely freeze or go into sleep mode & won't respond. Both of these issues required me to perform a hard reset. I sure wonder what is up with Apple.? Not only are we dealing with an "OS" that freezes but we have to live without some apps that didn't get included in "lion" & the Mobileme / iCloud account that I've had for years will now only sync with one other pc & I will lose the ability to sync my system preferences.

    Same problem here.

13" Macbook Pro (mid 2010) keeps freezing today and can only be fixed by holding the Power key until it goes off.  Am running OSX Lion 10.7.4

Strangely, my Desktop (iMac 27" mid 2010) is perfectly happy and stable.

    Apple, what have you done??????????

  • BW79 Level 1 Level 1

Just thought I'd drop in a quick update...

    After I reinstalled 10.7.4 and didn't put Sophos 8 on I haven't had a problem.

I wiped my hard drive two nights ago, and am now back up and running with a clean version of 10.7.4, plus Office, Dropbox, Evernote and a few other critical apps.

Fans seem to be running fast; must have to reset SMC.

Otherwise touch wood its OK so far.

I know how frustrating is and I can tell you how good is to be free of this issue since I put a new SDD. Since I found out that my SDD is the problem I did a bit of research and results are pretty bad. It seems that many SDD drives use the same controller that is famous of causing freezing not just for Mac users, Windows too. It's pathetic that non of the reviews say a word even thou is well know issue.

I don't think that everyone on this forum have SSD therefore can we make it clear who are SSD users.

    HI there

I have been having a very similar issue over the past couple of weeks. Freezing after about an hour of usage or even left doing nothing (not even a screensaver).

MY MacBook pro is about 6 years old but I too have upgraded my hard drive to SSD (128gb Crucial drive). It has been running like a dream ever since I fitted it abut 6 months ago.

I have also upgraded the wireless card to a later N card. I have been so happy with these upgrades as they completely tansformed it's performance.

Anyhow I now seem to be suffering the same issue as the rest of you guys. I am going to contact Crucial tomorrow and see if they are aware of any issues.

    I will keep you posted.
