44 is the country code for the UK. Except when calling inside the UK, callers will need to input the international access code or "+" in front of the number, then 44, then the number. When you call other people, except from the UK, your number will also be shown as +44**********

If you are calling from the UK to another UK number showing +44 is not necessary but if you do show it, the phone will work normally. Most people in the UK will know that 44 is the UK country code so they will know it is not an international call.

This really depends on your carrier and you should call them to double check because it is possible that the carrier's network will show +44 regardless of how you have written your number in the iPhone. The fact that the +44 appeared without your placing it might be evidence that your carrier has elected this to be so in their system.
