Create a conditional pop-up window/note

Does anyone know how to create a conditional, pop-up note, preferably timed or disappering when continuing ?

ie. If a cel is filled, like the last day in a month, then a note appears, as reminder to do something.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4Gb memory

There are no pop up notes in Numbers. You can make a table theat lists dates and events which can feed another table based on the date today and the contents of the original table. You can also Use iCal which is made to do just what you are asking to do-- they are called reminders.

Don't know if you can see the posts. I was originally thinking to trigger the 'note' when a cel is filled in but your idea of using ical instead, may present a broarder alternative as it automatically takes care of the number of days in the month and reminds me anyway. provided I switch the computer on. I've not used iCal so will experiment.

Morning Wayne,

being a knowledgable Numbers/Apple fellow, can you advise how I can get time (NOW time) into a cel and stop it updating. I want to get the exact time NOW and place it on record but I don't want it to update thereafter.

Have experimented with iCal, as you suggested and found it a much better way of doing the alarm thing. Thanks for that. I was impressed (again) at the broard uses to which iCal can be used.

I only converted to Mac a couple of years ago and there is still a lot of utilities I've not even played with yet.

Yours and anyones suggestions about apple software is always very welcome.

Hi Skip,

NOW will update each time Numbers recalculates the table in which it is located.

Numbers will recakculate that table anytime you make a change in a cell on that table (or on a table to which a formula on the first table is linked to a cell on the second which changes.

The only way I know of to stop NOW from updating is to:

  1. Click on the cell containing NOW
  2. Copy
  3. Go Edit > Paste Values

This repaces the formula in the cell with the value last calculated by that formula.

Hi Barry,

I'm not sure I understand you. What compose frame ? What camera icon ? I am using 'Snow Leopard'

is it possible you have some other OS ? or is there something else I am missing. Would'nt be first time.

I usually use 'CMD+SHIFT+4' hot keys to drag a frame over the part of the screen I want to take a snap shot of, (+3 for whole screen) have it dropped onto 'Desktop' and then drag it to where I need it. If it's to an email or some other software I usually get a green/white "+" sign on screen if it can be added.

Hi Barry, Thanks for comment. Yes I know it updates that is why I asked the question, however, copying and pasteing is not really an option, unless it can be done by the software. The manual delay, however short, is long enough to caurses errors in subsequent calculations. I was hoping for a better method like changing from text to numerical or the other way round or something like.

I actually think the updating seems to have a very limited use because of the updating feature.
