MS Windows equivalent tasks/program on Mac OS

Where do I find the equivalent of Remote Desktop Connection on Mac OS X Lion? I like the feature in MS Windows where I can click on the "MS orb/All Programs" and all of my programs are there? Is there a way to customize something like this in Mac OS? I hate to go to an Application folder and launch my application that way.

There are a few ways to create connections to commonly used apps.

1) Drag the Applications folder to the Dock. Make sure to place it to the right of the solid bar next to the Trash. It will create an alias of the folder. When you click on it, the alias will open to show all items in the Applications folder.

2) If there are only certain apps you want on the Dock, open the Applications folder and drag each individual app to the Dock. Drop it anywhere you want to the left of the solid bar. You can also drag them around on the Dock after placing them there. They aren't "stuck" in their initial position.

What about "Remote Desktop Connection"?

I believe that the equivalent on a Mac is Screen Sharing, though I don't know how equivalent it is. If you could specify exactly what you hope to do with it, we can better advise you.

In Windows' Recyle bin when open, there is an option to "Restore" which it will restore to wherever the file was deleted from. Is there something like this in Mac's Trashcan?

Select an item in the trash and choose File -> Put Back, or press the shortcut keystroke, command-delete, being careful not to press command-shift-delete, which empties the trash. Or control-click (ie, right-click) the file and choose Put Back.

As far as I know, Remote Desktop is a client to connect to Windows PC. Microsoft provide a free version for OS X though they say it has not intended for Lion. You can have a look at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/remote-desktop-con nection

But this will not allow you to connect to another MAC.

To reach quickly all applications, you can use Launchpad which is an application and should be in your dock.

Only some of them - specifically, the ones you have purchased from the App Store. And removing them from Launchpad means deleting them from the computer. You can rearrange the Launchpad so that only the ones you're interested in are on the first "page" of apps, and then just ignore everything on any other pages. Personally, though, I prefer Kurt's solution.

Hi Thomas,

Was that a more recent change? One of the early complaints about Launchpad was its lack of customizability. I can't be sure myself as I think it's needless eye candy. Necessary on the iPhone or iPad since that's your only link to launch things, but doesn't seem at all necessary in a desktop OS. The Dock works just fine for quick access of launching apps.

The Dock doesn't need enough room. If you just drag the entire Applications folder onto the Dock, as Kurt mentioned, it will add a single icon to the Dock that will, when clicked, open a menu with the contents of that folder. That gives you quick and easy access to everything in there, without taking up much space on the screen.
