Can you tell is a little more about your problem please. For example are you able to see the movies but unable to play them or can you not see them at all. What steps have you taken to try to resolve this, if any.

I have an Airport extreme base station, and an airport express. I have the updated software for all my computer components. I have my Apple TV first-generation and a iPad in which I do sharing on hold. At first I had an external hard drive with my complete media library on it connected to my airport extreme base station. I was able to access my media from the computer only. At times I would have to remind it to access my media library from that source. when I tried to access my library from my Apple TV the Apple TV at first did not recognize I even had sharing on. Once I restarted my laptop it would recognize I had movies but could not play them. next I disconnected the external hard drive with all my media on it and connected directly to my laptop. At that point Apple TV could not to see any of my media library. I have checked that my iTunes was accessing my media from my extra hard drive on multiple occasionsR

How did you try to connect your Apple TV to your iTunes library. In your opening thread you mentioned homesharing, homesharing has nothing to do with the Apple TV 1. Instead you connect to your iTunes library from the Apple TV in settings > computers > connect to iTunes.

I may have said it wrong. I have that second to the last apple tv that has some out. It a little black one without the hard drive built in, not the HD one.

Does your iTunes media folder location in the iTunes preferences >advanced, point to the correct location for your content.

Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.
