Just right click in a file with the extension that you want to open with OpenOffice, press "Open with..." and select the OpenOffice application
Select a text file and right click "open file with" and apply as so for all
You should know that LibreOffice is now the new source for OpenOffice since Oracle bought Sun and doesn't want to work with it too much any longer, so all the programers left and formed LibreOffice, that's where all the attention is being paid now.
I'm really hoping they don't go that route with VirtualBox. I know it's not as polished as Parallels or Fusion, but it has always worked fine for me. I have a number of Macs, so having a free option is great... especially since I'm not only looking at the initial cost of Parallels/Fusion on several machines, but the cost of upgrading to newer versions as well (which is always a non-issue with VirtualBox).
