I was forced recently to trade in my iPhone 4 for a 4S

Do I need to register this new phone all over again, or is there a way to just transfer all of the current information to the new phone? Like if I plug in the new phone to download everything/sync everything is there a way to get it to recognize the device the same way it did the old one? What problems will I encounter? I have to mail the old phone back in 5 days, and I want to make sure I do this properly without a headache.

Hi brelyse2686.

This is a very simple process and very easy to do.

1. Plug in your old phone and sync with iTunes. This will create a back up for you. (please make sure back up to computer is selected, as shown below)

2. When the sync is completed disconect your old phone and plug in your new phone. You will be prompted to either set up a new phone or restore from a back up (as shown below) select restore and your new phone will be set up exactly as your old phone was.

Of all the things backed up, your Contacts are not included ... see the asterisk in the section "iTunes will back up the following information" in the article here:

While you may get some Contact info (recent calls, favorites) you will lose anything else if you don't have some other means of saving and re-loading your Contacts. If your Contacts are saved in iCloud (or some other online storage like Yahoo or Google) then you can recover them separately after you load your backup onto your new iPhone. But if your Contacts are manually-entered and not saved anywhere, you may want to save those to iCloud or use an app to export them from your old iPhone before activating your new one. If your Contacts came from your computer, then simply re-load them like you did originally.

Actually, if they're already in iCloud (or other online storage) you just need to load the backup, which will re-load the appropriate account that you sync'd to (iCloud in your case, though you'll probably have to re-enter your password for security reasons). So, no need to recover them separately if they're stored online (sorry about that part).
