Wi-Fi Sync iPad and iTunes

My iPad and MacBook Pro are both set up with iCloud and are running off the same Wi-Fi station. I want to sync iTunes. When I go to the iPad settings>general>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync I find that the Sync Now button is greyed out. How do I activate the sync function?

Did you set up WiFi sync in iTunes in the Summary Pane of iTunes?

If it is set up properly - is iTunes running on the Mac? It has to be running in order to sync with Wifi - just like with the cable.
