If i buy a used iMac, say from Craigslist or ebay and it was purchased this year and has warranty until 2013, what do i need to prove this is under waranty still?? do i need proof of purchase?? Or is this just a bad idea??

The original warranty does not extend to a used Mac.
Craigslist may not be the best bet for purchasing a used computer.
You have a one year limited warranty the same as a new Mac by purchasing a refurbished Mac from Apple > http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac
so if i buy used, the warranty is a non-issue, right??
I bought a refurbished MBP and had an issue with it. It was such an issue that I almost quit using apple all together...but it was eventually figured out and fixed....
that being said, i am actually looking at a refurb, but my wife is not so sure anymore....
If you are buying it from a private party, no transfer of warranty is necessary unless it is for the AppleCare plan. The general one year warranty starts from the date the person selling it purchased it.
Klaus is correct, and if the machine is still covered by the original one year warranty you are eligible to purchase two additional years under AppleCare. I've purchased AppleCare for every Mac I've ever owned, well worth it.
You can actually verify the coverage of the unit before you purchase it. All you need to do is plug in the serial number to this site and it will give you the coverage information. +1 on getting AppleCare if it's still within its first year.
