How to toggle between fast forward/rewind and volume during playback?

When I am playing back a tune and want to adjust the volume, I sometimes only have the elapsed time on the display and using the volume slider just fast forwards and rewinds the track. Is there a way to toggle between fast forward/rewind and volume? This drives me crazy!

Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

hit the select button ( middle button ), there is 3 options. when you start up a song it sould be on the volume option, when you hit it once, it switches to the rewind/fast forward option. click it again and you get the rate song option.
