Why can't I move a whole program with menus to the other display?

I have a 2009 Macbook and a large ViewSonic monitor. They connect fine but I want to work on InDesign on the larger, external monitor while maintaining the use of the Macbook's screen and keyboard. When I move the InDesign screen over, the top menu does not come with it. (I can move all of the tools and things, but I want the File, Edit, Object etc. menus over with all the rest.)

I can do this from a PC because all the menus are connected to the window. How do I do this on a Mac? It's really cumbersome to have to move back and forth and it defeats the purpose of having two monitors!

Any help would be appreciated.

Go to

System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement

You will see a diagram of your two displays which will be your monitor and macbook display. On top of the representation of your Macbook's display will be a Bar, signifying your menu bar. You can pick up the menu bar and drag it over to the other monitor. This will mean everything will have the menu bar on your monitor, but if that's not a problem...

Hope this works out!
