Q: "White Screen of Death" Solutions required:

I tried few of the solutions available on web to fix my iphone 3gs 16GB.

I had done some RND to the phone and had played for jailbreaking my phone couple of times....Phone is out of warranty and opened by a local vendor and hence cannot be replaced. Solution I had tried to fix:

1) Rebooted it more than 100 times, hard reset, soft reset, DFU mode, recovery mode...but white screen still persists.

2) Went to a local iPhone vendor and he tried to fix it by replacing it with a new LCD display, it didn't fixed it.

3) Local Vendor suggested me that the LCD display IC has been corrupted, heard something new from him as I couldn;t find a LCD Display IC on web for an iPhone 3GS

4) No my phone is back with me and I tried to restore it with itunes and it says "iPhone cannot be restored, unknown error".

Should I trash it or it can be usuable.... Please suggest

Thanks,

Punit

Jailbreaking can render a device useless... regardless, discussion of jailbroken devices is not permitted here.

    options:

    1) buy a new iphone, best buy has the iphone 4 on sale for $50 with a new 2 year contract

    2) sell it for parts on ebay / recycle it

    3) pay apple $199 to fix it out of warranty

did you try holding the home button + volume up and then sleep button, like in this video

Apple will not even touch a jailbroken phone, Rigor.

He didn't charged me anything as he is still looking for LCD display IC for iPhone 3GS which he is expecting to arrive to his shop pretty soon.

Any other means to get some money out of my old phone??

    Try the following;

Press and hold the home button, then the up-volume button, then the sleep/power button (so all three buttons are now pressed and held) --- it takes a while, but the white screen will go away and then after another 10 seconds or so (still holding btw!) the apple logo will come up, release the buttons and then wait, it'll boot normally again in a minute or two.

I've used this to resolve WSoD on iPod4, iPhone4 and now need to do it on my iPhone 3GS, which sadly, has a broken up-volume button, so it's proving a bit tricky.

EDIT: I see the first reply does mention about this method - sorry about that.  OP didn't seem to indicate if they had tried that option.

If the home-up-sleep combo doesn't work ( as I encountered recently ), it might be worth letting the unit run flat for a few days and then plug it in and try the home-up-sleep combo again.    I was surprised, I thought I was going to have to bin this 3GS but amazingly it came back to life for me.

If Home+upvolume button+Sleep screen dosent work, quickly open the iphone and remove the battery clip and re fix it, it will work and it worked for me for iphone 4.

If the iPhone White screen of death came randomly then you should try this fix [DFU mode].

    1. Open Itunes and connect your iPhone to your PC/Mac

    2. Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button all at the same time.

    3. After 10 seconds release the sleep/wake button. And continue holding the home button. Keep holding the home button until you see a message saying "iTunes has discovered an iPhone in recovery mode, you must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes". There you have it your if is in DFU mode.

    BUUM!!! it's done.

Thank you thak you....Your post is the first one I read and it worked.  My screen just went black all of a sudden, didn't drop it or nothing, just out of the blue.  So, this done the trick for me!  Thank you again...

My iPad was showing a white screen and then occasionally would show lots of black and red lines. I tried restarting it etc all of the normal things that you would think to try. I then got told to hold it with my right hand and start hitting the headphone slot quite firmly and it worked. I think there may have been a lose connection somewhere but it's now resolved itself. Apple were going to charge me £199 for a replacement iPad because it's out of warranty, I suggest you try this if you have the same problem before you go and pay for replacements/servicing.

--I presume this would also work for iPhone too!!

TRY A THREE FINGER DOUBLE TAP ON THE SCREEN...

This worked for me as my magnification can be screwy at times, and zoom in all the way to the point where I don't even see anything.

I honestly can't believe this hasn't been mentioned... go to the screen when it lit up white and use 3 fingers simultaneously to double tap the screen.

Could save you losing everything and buying a whole new phone, for something so easy a fix.

Again, you're white screen problem might be something else, but its worth a try.

    Sam
