Backup snagged by excluded file

In time machine, I'm trying to exclude several apparently corrupted photos from backup(likely related to previous gray screen of death archive and install). However, the time machine widget keeps telling me that it's getting copy error on a single file that I have excluded. The file did have 3 different "copies" each of which I excluded. This one file seems to be the problem, as I have excluded a multitude of other files (mostly photos, some from the same event even) with no problem advancing the backup. The file is, unfortunately, a photo I'd rather not get rid of, or I would have just deleted it. Thanks for any ideas!

Sounds like you didn't get the right file excluded (that can be tricky), or the preferences file (where the exclusions are stored) is damaged and being ignored.

If you're sure you excluded the right file, try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

If that doesn't help, use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here. Also post a screenshot of the exclusions.

I'm wondering if finder doesn't search the previous system which I used to recover from so i may manually look for the photo there...

I'm not sure what you mean by "previous system." If you're running Leopard (10.5.x), and did an Archive and Install, preserving users and settings, and have a Previous System xxxx folder on your startup drive, then yes, that's a possibility. Finder searches generally don't include system files, unless you specifically ask for them.

Yes it was an archive and install, but I couldn't find photos in the previous system (I guess because I pulled them out to save).

I did the reset as in A4 and no luck. Actually a couple of photos have showed up (all from the same event) but they all are supposedly excluded. One thing that is interesting, as I excluded several corrupt files over many backups, the amount of GB required to back up gradually dwindled as it seemed to work in some backing up prior to failing each time. So when it failed on one photo several times, it would still go exactly 7.6GB into the backup before failing, but seemingly needing to back up less and less. However, now that it says only less than 1GB needed when it starts backing up, as soon as it hits that it keeps going still until 7.6GB is hit again. So at the beggining it will say 430 KB of 1 GB complete or whatever, but after 1 GB the numbers go up in parallel until it says 7.6GB of 7.6 GB then fails...

Here are the screen shots. One idea we had is I could email the culprits and use gmail as my "cloud", or save them at work, and then just delete them I guess...You can't see it in my do not back up image, but previous systems was also excluded, and each of the named photos is listed (I excluded the whole event)... Thanks for your help and thanks again for any thoughts!

It does look like you have multiple copies of those files. The ones you've excluded seem to be at the top level of your internal HD.

The ones Time Machine is stumbling over are in the iPhoto Library in your home folder.

On the exclusions page, after pressing the plus sign, navigate in your home folder to the Pictures folder, then the iPhoto folder, etc., or locate it in a Finder window and drag it to the exclusions box.

When you do, the exclusion display will look something like this:

~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2009/ojo/ . . .

The ~ symbol means the logged-on user's home folder.

If you think all the pictures in that "ojo" folder are damaged, just exclude that entire folder, not each file separately.

That is interesting. Last night I could see that the file path listed on the copy error was not just the picture name, but when I tried to go home folder to pictures, iphoto library, it seemed it wouldn't drill down any further beyond the iphoto library to actually get into the iphoto library. I could get into it from the top level and excluded the ojo "event" from there, but it seemed like I couldn't advance beyond the iphoto library icon when I started from my home folder.

I will try dragging from finder maybe that will allow me to use the right file path, pull in the right copy, but I fear I may get stuck in the same situation in finder. I will try to screen shot if I do. My wife will be taking computer on a trip tomorrow so I may have to reupdate later if it doesn't work tonight. Thanks for the advice again, I feel like I'm getting closer!

Oh, yes, sorry, I wasn't thinking about that. 😟

The iPhoto Library is a special kind of folder, called a "package." You can see it's contents in the Finder (but not in the exclusions prompt) by right-clicking it and selecting the Show Package Contents option.

But . . . excluding part of a package isn't a good idea; if you were to try to restore it, the whole thing might be damaged.

Try excluding the whole iPhoto Library, by dragging it to the exclusions box.

Once you get everything else backed-up, you can try to deal with the damaged items. If you can see them in iPhoto, try to export them somewhere, such as your desktop, and delete them from iPhoto. Then run a backup.

Perhaps you can then fix or re-import them.

Thanks, I didn't get the chance to get back to it, so will have to wait 2 weeks. I will update again then, hopefully my wife doesn't have a crash while she's gone :) I think (hope) most of our stuff is actually backed up through partial backups that eventually failed, because it only asks for less than a GB when backing up now...

Took a long time to get back to this! There ended up being so many "corrupt" photos that I had to go through them all and exclude parts of the iphoto library package, otherwise I couldnt get to the next corrupt file as it wouldn't move on until I excluded them in just the way you noted (opening the "package" contents). Hopefully things will be ok if I have to restore despite your warnings, I just couldnt see another way to do it.

Anyways, I now have my first ever successful backups going on, and will go back to what is excluded and see how many I can just delete and how many I can try to export and reimport/save. Nothing crucial is at least in the excluded pile except some wedding pix but I also have those on a separate disk.

The beauty is that now I was able to finally feel safe enough to delete my "previous" systems. Funnily enough doing that did delete my iPhoto application even though I was using it in the current system so I had to reinstall from disk. Now things are running very smoothly (the previous systems-( had to try twice when rescuing from the gray screen of death) apparently took up so much memory that the whole computer was bogged down. iPhoto would quit frequently and be hard/slow to scroll through, and I would also get several initialization errors including "nilp" when first opening a DVD - all those problems are gone! Anyways thanks for the help! I hope some others can learn from this, I have learned a lot..
