can i use a different printer than the airprint on iPad2?

Can anyone tell me if they are able to use a non airprint printer on their iPad2 64Gb please, I have tried and tried but all to no avail.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1.1, 64Gb

After two whole days of 'Googling' surfing the net, 'phoning Apple Help line, you Sir have conquered where others have failed. I am in your debt, I have for the first time been able to start printing. HOORAH!!
