Hi
I'm trying to clear up space on my external hard drive (Western Digital - My Passport), but it won't let me delete anything. In file, 'move to trash' is not highlighted, and when I click on get info, under 'sharing and permissions', it says 'you can only read'.
Any ideas?

Is the drive formatted NTFS? Select the drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Ownership and Sharing panel make a snapshot of what is displayed - COMMAND-SHIFT-4 then select area using crosshairs. The image will be saved on your Dekstop. Then use the camera icon in the forum composition window's toolbar to put the image into your message.

Yes, the format is NTFS, and below is what I get when I click on sharing and permissions
OS X cannot write to an NTFS formatted drive without third-party software. That's why you cannot delete files from OS X. You could delete them from a Windows system, however.
You can purchase third-party software that will allow you to write to an NTFS formatted drive from OS X:
The above two will cost money but work reliably with Lion.
ah right ok. So if I connect it to a Windows system, it won't mess up the file types or anything etc? I'll be able to just delete and edit as I would do a USB stick?

Yes, assuming the files can be used on a Mac such as Office files as an example.
