Converting Music from MP3 to AAC

Ok so i'm smack bang in the middle of converting my entire itunes library from mp3 to aac. I'm having two separate libraries - the original mp3, and ones in aac format. Anyway, my question is that once i've converted all the music, will i still have to have the 'convert higher bit rate songs to... ' box checked when i put it on my ipod? I want to have it at 128kbps to maximise storage space, but yeah i wanted to make sure i know exactly what i'm doing. I've already spent hours messing around with this stuff.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks

The burning question is why? Converting from one lossy format to another will only degrade the quality of the music. iTunes can downsample songs as it is loading them on to the iPod touch so you don't need to make your own smaller copies. If you want to maximise storage space why are you duplicating your library? And, yes you will still have the option to downsample where appropriate, iTunes isn't going to inspect your entire library to determine if there are any files worth shrinking before displaying that option.

I meant that i want to maximise space on my ipod, i've got a 32 gig but it's currently filled to the brim with music. If i convert it to aac i practically double the amount i can fit on my ipod so that's the reasoning. The whole '2 libraries thing' is because when i tried syncing it before (converting the music as it goes on the ipod) the majority of the album artwork didn't sync over, and because i've pretty much got OCD - this bothered me. Also it does make it easier for when i'm transferring music onto my ipod and whatnot.

So, will it still have to take hours to convert when it goes on my ipod? Or will it be at the 128kbps already, therefore meaning no need to tick that option?

Thanks

I don't know for certain, but I suspect you might find that if you make sure the album art is embedded that the converted tracks should have art. (All my files have embedded art but I don't use that feature and haven't time to test it right now.)

If you've already downsampled then there is no need to convert it a second time when adding to the device, however I would experiment with trying to get the system to work as it is supposed to. With two libraries you lose all the benefits of syncing ratings, play counts etc. and you are creating more work for yourself every time you add a new album to your two libraries.

I have a script called CreateFolderArt which will embed artwork into selected tracks. See what happens if you remove a problem album from the device, embed its artwork, then try adding it back again.
