Can anyone help? I understand there are adapters that enable you to plug in a USB stick to the iPad. Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a wifi dongle to the iPad by using an iPad/USB adapter?

You cannot.
If your iPad does not have 3G, look into a Personal Hotspot offered by many carriers. It's a hardware device that connects via 3G/4G to the internet and allows other devices to connect to it via wifi. It would be the equivalent of a wirless dongle.
