my status menu and spolight icon and other icons have disappeared from the menu bar. When I use system preferences and check them to appear the check is removed. I am in an admin user. Help to restore my menu bar?
Mac mini (Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
Could be corrupt plist try deleting com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
found here:
usenamer/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
after you delete the plist
open terminal and paste the command:
killall SystemUIServerand return. This command will kill the process and MacOS X will automatically rebuild the menu bar. Hopefully problem solved clearing out old cache.

Hi,
Tried to locate file but it was not there. Ran terminal with the command suggested but got "No matching processes belonging to you were found". Quite to try any other suggestion you might have.

Locate the file by Finder>Go>Go to Folder
copy and paste:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plistproceed as stated above.
Hi, Did find the file - removed it; terminal action resulted in the same message. Restart did not recreate the file. Icon still bare. Sorry but it's not worked. Any other idea?
I came across this post while searching for solutions to the same problem... has anyone come up with a solution for this??? In my instance my 3rd party status items are still displaying (sophos AV, littlesnitch, and synkron) and my notifications status also shows... however the status for time machine, wi-fi, battery, and spotlight are gone. I tried the above fix but got exactly the same error.

I tried a variety of suggestions gleened from "brains" (is that what they call themselves in Apple Stores?) to gash comments on the net.
In the end the problem was resolved by uploading Mountain Lion and reinstalling the neture operating system. Seems OK now!
I ended up having to restore it from a time machine backup... it was the only way I could get it fixed.
Thanks a lot pqhuy! Your suggestion resolved the issue. But I didn't disable my Filevault (I am using this one too). I just rebooted into Safe Mode and all icons coming back. To confirm, I rebooted normally and everything is going back to normal. Before, all apple applications were having blank buttons which makes using my mac impossible. I created a new user account (by guessing which button is "+") and I don't have the issue when I login under the new account. But when I move the library folder to this new user, I got the same problem.
Same case - reboot in Safe Mode worked for me. It turned all disappeared icons back right away!
