Yet you say safari launches when you select dashboard from the dock (which according to you has no file assoicated with the icon because show if finder shows nothing, yet there is an icon other than a question mark).

If yes to all of those I think you didn't follow the instructions correctly because that combination of events is impossible.

The correct keyboard shortcut in a portable Mac is the fn button (left bottom key of the keyboard), pressed with the f12 key. As the OP reported, your advice did not address Dashboard. It did increase the volumn.

It's not a "Whatever" situation, really. Just to be clear, we're not competing, we're both here to help perkim, right?

Press the fn key (lower left bottom, along with the F12 key on the top level). Dashboard should start up.

My "whatever" was I didn't care how the dashboard gets invoked but I wanted any other method except invoking it through the dock.

And correct, I was (am) getting a little frustrated (bad night I guess) and it was starting to show up in my posts. So I will take the OP suggestion and say out of this from here on.

I understand completely what you were aiming to do. But unfortunately, the shortcut you gave had no chance of opening up Dashboard. On a MBP, it will only increase sound volume.

OK, don't open Dashboard from the dock (as X423 previously suggested). Go into the Applications folder, and click on Dashboard. Does it open OK there?

We were all new at one time. Not to worry.

OK, let's go back to your HOME library,OK?

Click on the back screen to get the Finder, Go up to "Go" menu

press Option key will clicking on "Go" Click on the Library, then open "Preferences."

In Preferenes, go down to

com.apple.dashboard.plist.

Take that file and put it in the trash for now.

Restart the Dashboard from your Applications folder.

Any better?

Is it possible it is a corrupt preference file causing the problem. Safari is involved when you take a clipping (scissor tool) and add it to the Dashboard. Deleting the plist should clear any customization of this sort.

Try moving to the trash or deleting the com.apple.dashboard.plist

Finder>Go>Go to Folder>

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dashboard.plist

Then in terminal copy and paste:

killall Dock

enter/Return

or reboot.

If that does not sort your problem, open a guest account and see if the problem is universal.

If that is the case I would reinstall the OS.

I have the identical problem to perkim's. It started immediately after I clipped a web page to Dashboard. I tried the suggestion of trashing the com.apple.dashboad.plist file and then launching Dashboard from the Applications folder, but Dashboard still immediately throws me to Safari. And I mean immediately: I do not have time to delete the web clip (which I am assuming is causing this Dashboard weirdness).

Can you help me, please?

I'm using a mid-2011 iMac with O.S. 10.8.1.

I am having exactly the same problem. I also clipped a web page to the Dashboard, and not immediately get thrown to Safari. I have looked for the com.apple.dashboard.plist file but can't find it.

I really need some help with this.

I solved my problem by shuting down and restarting. Then, I was able to delete the web page from Dashboard. I decided not to clip another web page to Dashboard, because I don't want to go through this again.

Thank you, I've just managed to find that com.apple.dashboard.plist file and deleted it. I also shut down and restarted my laptop and I can see the Dashboard again!

My only problem is that, whilst trying to follow the instructions on this thread, I have now accidentally deleted the web clip widget and have no idea of how to reinstall it! 😟
