I have iMac with Lion 10.7.4
I have Voice Over turned OFF
I use GMAIL and Chrome
New emails are read out loud even though I have Voice Over turned off. This is driving everyone in the room nuts! How do I turn off this feature?

I think I got it. I was sitting at the screen when a message popped up with the voice over. There was a little spanner icon in the top right which allowed me to turn off this feature.
