I have 2 gmail accounts and had an icon set up for the login screen for gmail then I could enter either mailbox name and password. That link doesn't work any more the URL block just keeps blinking. I had to resort to use settings and have my user ID and password stored on the IPad. It works fine with one account but when I add the second gmail account how do I select which email I wat. It always defers to the last one I used.

Maybe I am missing something but why don't you give one of them a different name and then when you are in the main Mailboxes window you will know which is which.... Or did I miss your point. You did set up a second account for this correct?
Also, if you created a Safari shortcut on the home screen that quit working, tap and hold down on the icon and the X to delete will pop up. Then create a new shortcut again.
In the native Mail app you can have multiple GMail accounts and toggle between them easily. If you're using Safari, why?
They both have different names in settings but when I click on the Mail icon it only shows one of them. I deleted the Safari link and set it up again but same problem.

I have two different AOL account set up in my mail app - with different names AOL Account and Office/Work Account are the two different names - and it works for me without issue so I'm not sure what's going on there.
I understand why you are suing the Safari shortcut, as many others are doing the same thing since you can't password protect the mail accounts. You should be able to recreate the shortcut and if you want to try this, it just might help .... Clear Safari. You don't necessarily have to clear the history, but the cookies and data would be a must if you try this.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

If you have two accounts in Settings, then in the Mail app just tap the button at the top-left corner to take you to Mailboxes, and you would see all your accounts there. But as you've noted, you can't password protect access to the accounts using Mail.
