I have an iPod touch 4g I'm updating from iOS 4.1 to 5.1.1. the iPod is not jailbroken and it is registered. I tried to activate using my wi-fi didn't work. I tried to activate using iTunes and that didn't work either. I've put the iPod in recovery mode and try again, didn't work and I've tried in DFU mode and try again and that didn't work either.

Can you contact iTunes on your computer?
Try powering off than then back on your router.
This message comes up every time I try to activate my iPod touch on iTunes.
I'm trying again using wireless network and it says 'could not activate iPod touch because the activation server cannot be reached. try connecting your iPod touch to iTunes to activate it or try again in a few minutes.'
N.B. I've registered my iPod touch today
The same is happening to me too plus when it was working the ipod imessage wasn't working either i think their servers are down?
I agree with you, I've just checked to see if anyone has the same suspicions and found some people are having similar problems. I'll temporarily disable firewall antivirus ect. and see if it will work.
my ipad wont activate either tried all sorts of pcs, internet connections etc.
only thing i can do is downgrade it, thank god i saved my shsh blobs.
I have fixed mine in the setup when it asks you to connect to a WIFI connect to yours then press the home botton it should have start over or more wifi settings click more wifi settings then the blue arrows show click the blue arrow on your wifi and change the DNS to 8.8.8.8

Its aright glad to help others for some reason my iMessage wont activate i changed to date and time and what i have to do no fix even rang apple they dong know fustraighting
Check if your restriction is enabled on your device general/restrictions if it is then turn it off and try again or try the DNS 8.8.8.8 or forget wi-fi network turn wi-fi off turn your device off, then turn it on connect to your wi-fi then try the activation process.
have you got any problems with facetime too?

Yes I got problems with facetime i did all what you said before i research it didn't work for me I am taking it back to the shop their going to replace it no cost thank you have you got a problem with facetime?
