what is the +1 in front of phone numbers mean??

some of my long distance numbers have +1 in front and others do not??

"+" signifies the international dialing prefix, "1" indicates the country code, in this case USA.


e.g., some other countries: UK +44; Spain +34


Having numbers stored using the "+" format allows you to call that number worldwide, without having to remember the unique international numerical dialing prefix for the country from where you're calling (in USA that is 011).


For example, if I have a friend in the UK that has a phone number xx-yyyy, and I have that number stored in the phone as 011-44-xx-yyyy, then I can only dial him from US. If I have it stored as +44-xx-yyyy, then I can call him from anywhere, including the UK.
