Q: Greyed-out songs problem

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry if I there are other threads that already talked about this. I tried googling for solutions, but I could not find any one article that could help my current problem.

After downloading my songs onto my iTunes, I tried to sync the songs to my iPhone. That's when the "Greyed-out" songs started showing up. In the Library itself, the songs are normal, playable. But under "Devices" -> Music, the songs appear "greyed-out" with a circle being created with two arrows that do not move. Furtherrmore, the "grey-out" song(s) does not sync to my iPhone. Below is a picture of the problem.

Again, the song is plays perfectly fine in the Library. However, it will not play under the Devices -> Music category nor will it appear on my iPhone. Please help me. I am tired of this problem and would like a quick solution. If there was a thread with the exact same problem, please post the link to said thread IF there is a solution. It is much appreciated.

I already tried one of the solutions that worked one time but doesn't seem to work now. The solution involved logging out of one's Apple account then logging back in. As I said, this one doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Any help and input is appreciated. Thanks.

I've been having this exact same problem. I tried everything from the different checking / unchecking of boxes.

Eventually I tried to back up my music, then delete all the music in iTunes and importing it all back in. But this was to no avail.

But then what did work was:

    1) In the settings part of your device click Music

    2) Un-click sync music

    3) Click the "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres option" rather than the entire music library.

    4) All the greyed out songs that you are getting under music on your iPod, put these under a new playlist on your iTunes.

    5) Now select the playlist with all the music that would not properly sync beforehand (Within the Music section under settings in your device).

    6) Click the option "Automatically fill free space with songs"

    7) Sync

Hopefully this works for you, I have a 5th generation iPod and iOS 8.3 - Running iTunes on a 2010 Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite.

I was having the same problem - somehow I had uncheck the box and then the item "un-greyed". OMG - pain in the "you know what". But I think that is the solution. I was able to drag the song into the Playlist I wanted once it was unchecked. That is if anyone is having the problem in 2015.

YUP! At least for me my 4th gen iPod touch does not like the "Sync over Wi-fi" setting". It makes it angry and stubborn.

I fixed my grey-song problem in my iTunes 12 Music library by resetting my sync history.  Note, this did not fix the grey-songs on my iPhone 6 Plus which seem to be related to songs I downloaded directly to the iPhone.

I use iTunes 12 on Windows and found the reset sync history feature here:

    1) Click icon in top left corner and select "Preferences..." or hit "Ctrl+," (hold down control and press comma) or if you can see the menu click "Edit" > "Preferences..."

    2) In "Device Preferences" dialog, click "Devices" icon at the top

    3) click "Reset Sync History" button near bottom

    4) click "OK" button to close "Devices Preferences"

    Cheers!

It's iTunes servers not being available; probably overcrowded.  It's them, not you.

    I HAVE A SOLUTION 3rd AUGUST 2015

I don't know WHY but this problem has plagued me for what seems like years.

The only thing I have found to fix this is to plug my iphone's USB connection cord into the 3.0 / blue / extra fast USB outlet on my computer (mine is on the back of my tower). After doing this EVERYTHING syncs like it's no trouble at all. I don't know why this fixes it, but if it helps even one other person then I had to post!!!!!

OK so my wife was having this problem and all sorts of complaining so I figured how hard could it be, it's a Mac right. So I had a couple of goes and sure enough songs she had in her playlist would not transfer across to her iPhone. The problem the songs greyed out. Which led me here. I just couldn't believe it could be so difficult as all the supposed solutions posted so I had a closer look.

When I checked the greyed out songs in her playlist against here entire 'My music' I discovered that the songs in her 'My Music' didn't appear greyed out and DIDN'T have the tick in the lefthand column. Those that appeared normally in her playlist were ticked. Her sync setting were to only sync ticked songs so obviously although the songs existed in a playlist, and would play if double clicked, they would not sync to the iPhone because they weren't ticked.

After clicking all the appropriate songs in her entire 'My Music' they were no longer greyed out in her playlists and synced quite happily. So simple

For Apple to grey out songs in your playlist that haven't been ticked seems like a good hint to me that something is wrong with your set-up but to be truly Mac-like when you go to sync your iDevice it should tell you that there are songs in your playlist that aren't ticked and will not be synced. Or when you select in iTunes the playlists you want synced to your phone it should warn you if any of the songs are unticked before you even get to the sync stage.

TIP: To tick or untick a bunch of songs, first Shift Click to hilight the many songs and then Control - Click for the popup menu which has 'Untick selection' or 'Tick selection' depending on your needs.

Amazing.. this worked for me! I actually do not sync music, I only stream through iTunes Match but I had 11 hours of these greyed out songs always showing in the Music Tab under my Device and your suggestion has finally allowed me to delete them

Amazing, this solved my problem.  So simple, but I never really paid much attention to the tick marks.  Thanks WunWingLoh!

I finally got a fix for the silent gray songs!  It's a little tedious but you could just do it a little at a time.  Right click on the gray song title, then scroll down to the last item "Check..." and right click it, and , Voila!  The title turns black again and plays fine.

Right click and create acc version. Re-sync and it works for me.
