Q: Greyed-out songs problem

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry if I there are other threads that already talked about this. I tried googling for solutions, but I could not find any one article that could help my current problem.

After downloading my songs onto my iTunes, I tried to sync the songs to my iPhone. That's when the "Greyed-out" songs started showing up. In the Library itself, the songs are normal, playable. But under "Devices" -> Music, the songs appear "greyed-out" with a circle being created with two arrows that do not move. Furtherrmore, the "grey-out" song(s) does not sync to my iPhone. Below is a picture of the problem.

Again, the song is plays perfectly fine in the Library. However, it will not play under the Devices -> Music category nor will it appear on my iPhone. Please help me. I am tired of this problem and would like a quick solution. If there was a thread with the exact same problem, please post the link to said thread IF there is a solution. It is much appreciated.

I already tried one of the solutions that worked one time but doesn't seem to work now. The solution involved logging out of one's Apple account then logging back in. As I said, this one doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Any help and input is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a simular problem, except that all of the songs in my Iphone are grey.

Everytime I sync it looks like Itunes will sync my music too, but I never does...

I tried everything here, but nothing seems to work.

The bar below my Itunes also illustrates this problem!

    Can someone please help?

(READ BOLD AND ITALIC PART FOR SOLUTION) Well,  i think i solved it (and solved, not deleted itunes or any ipod songs) i have an ipod touch 4g and the exact same thing happened to me in itunes when i tried to add a new song, it greyed and wouldn't let me sync it, it didn't apear on my ipod at all, only itunes, i even played it in itunes to check if the file was corrupted, it was fine. so heres what i did, (seeing that i couldn't find a solution ANYWHERE)

I went to itunes, went to the grey song under my ipod section, music, then i went to the greyed out song, pressed delete. so now it wasn't in my ipod, but it WAS in my itunes library. So then i unplugged my iPod, resprung it, plugged it back in, and then dragged the song to my ipod music section. POOF it worked, the song was now on my iPod and playing.

This worked. So easy, why didn't I think of this....?

@sstephany1's solution totally worked for me... none of the others did. I changed 1 to AAC and the others became "un-greyed" automacially. Thanks so much!

Okay, so I was getting the greyed out songs problem, and all of a sudden, my brand new ipod touch, for no obvious reason at all, has decided to delete it's own ENTIRE song library that I had spent possibly a few hours putting on it.

    Great.

TBH I haven't read through these posts, and I probably will,

but stuff like this just makes me and possibly other readers just start to wonder about android devices, and having direct access to the file system on your own portable device, and open source media formats....

I mean, apart from the amazing technology that it is, and not taking it for granted....

I suspect this might be unimpressive compared to the way other devices handle this sort of thing....

I still love you apple, but golly these sorts of things can be reeeallly annoying.

    To be fair,

it's possible I disconnected the ipod while it was transferring files.

Maybe that caused the deletion of all the files I had previously put on.

    I'm not sure though.

Just a bit steamed about it at the moment,

and the grey-song thing is annoying.

Don't know if this is something that everyone has already tried but I was having the same problem.

I turned my phone to airplane mode and then when into iTunes and highlighted every song I have (roughly 3,000) and right clicked and "unchecked" them.

Then I synced the phone so that all of the songs were no longer there.

I went back in, highlighted them all, "selected" them again and then re-synced the phone.

Let me know if this works!

Simply put, this is what I did.. I checked to make sure all my files were able to be played by iTunes.

Then I thought, I must have unplugged my device (iPhone 4S) before it was synced completely.

I then resynced it, waited until the status bar was complete and done.

^ simple yet effective solution people oversee because they get impatient.

After searching and searching for answers I wound up on this dicussion board. I did not find a solution to the mysterious greyed out songs. So I started fumbling around itunes and I believe I have fixed my problem.

I have an iPhone 4 (latest iOS 7) and latest iTunes 11 update on my macbook pro. I went to sink my iPhone to add some older songs but they were greyed out and would not add. My solution to this wound up being easy. I highlighted all the songs in my library and right clicked. Then looked at my options and finally decided to go with "Check Selection." Somehow some way this worked. All my songs are no longer greyed out and they sync to my phone like they used to.

I have no idea how or why these little bugs happen. But they can be a major pain in the A$&. I hope this helps other with the same problem.

I still got love for you Apple.

Hope it works for me too!

    Cheers (:

Thanks Meehan, Apple should send u a cheque for solving their problems....!

Then again....You'd think a msg saying ' this song cannot be played because auto download has been turned off, would u like to auto download this song?' Might have been a standard error msg.... Instead of just .... Nope, sorry , u can't play this song because it's grey. Love u apple.
