The startup sound works but after you get to the desktop screen there is no sound. When you push the speaker keys there is a circle with a line thru it. I reboot and everything works after reboot. So I have to start and reboot everytime to get the sound to work.

Open the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here: /Library/Preferences
Click Go
Move the com.apple.soundpref.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.
I couldn't find that file in the Library/Preferences
Try it this way...
Double click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
That will open the Finder with the root library already selected.
Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Not sure what the MacHD Icon is still aliitle new to Mac...

Nope don't have a icon like that on my decktop.... I saw one like that in system Prefernces but it says startup disk on it.
Ok.. not the one in System Preferences ...
Click the Finder icon in your Dock. Should be all the way on the left side.
Now from the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Finder > Preferences > General
Select: Hard disks under Show these items on the desktop
Found it .... It wasn't added to decktop I check library/prefernce still no sound file in it either
You double clicked the icon right?
The /Library/Preferences folder is there...
Yep it brought up the finder with library on it and click it and went to prefernce and still no sound file hmmm

Nope goes from com.apple software update to com.apple time machine
Which Mac OS X are you running?
I even did a search under Library and no file found
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
