What does "You can't open 'application X' because it is not supported on this architecture" mean?

I installed Family Tree Maker on 10.5.8. The installation was "successful", but when I double click the icon an error message says, "you can't open the application because it is not supported on this architecture." FTM says my Mac met system requirements and there's nothing they can do on their end. What do I do?

Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You have an older Mac that uses an IBM/Motorola PowerPC CPU. This app is most likely meant to be used on a newer Mac with an Intel CPU.

Update -

In checking the developer's website, it says that you need and Intel based Mac!

System Requirements:
  • Mac OS X 10.5 or later, including OS X Lion
  • Intel-based Mac
  • DVD Drive
  • All online features require Internet access

I would call the developer and inform them that they should return your money because they don't know enough about their products, nor Mac computers to give their customers the corect tech support. You should never have been sold this app for your Mac. Perhaps they have an older version that supported PPC Macs.
