How do I use my installation disc to start up my iMac?

2. Start you Mac, immediately slip in the disc and press & hold the Option key on your USB keyboard. When the startup manager appears, select your installation disc from amoung the options presented.
thank you. does it matter that my install disk is an older version of OS X than the one currently in use, which is now 10.6.8.
The discs are machine specific, so as long as it is the proper disc for your Mac, the current installed version should not be an issue.
additionally, I only have a wireless keyboard. Is that a problem?
I don't have experiences with trying to select the startup volume with a BT keyboard. I know some folks report issues with doing it. I don't know how quickly BT kicks in in the Mac boot sequence. If you can use the BT keyboard, the instructions would be the same.
Let us know what happens.
thank you. I'll get back to you. Hopefully this doesn't take too long. The computer is working, but very slowly....
One problem is that these boot modifiers seem not to work with Bluetooth keyboards, as many users who hold down the modifier keys immediately at startup find that the Mac boots up normally, ignoring the modifiers. The solution is simple: wait to press the keys until you hear the startup chime, but before you see the spinning gear at boot. This allows the Mac to load the appropriate bluetooth drivers so that it can see the keyboard, but is early enough in the boot process that the keys aren’t ignored.
I found this in my boilerplate help files, but I don't know who I stole it from! 😁
I restarted the imac with the previous instructions before your last response came in, and I'm staring at the apple logo which seems frozen time.
Any advice? Should I press and hold the power button? Or is that a bad idea?
Does the spinning cogwheel eventually show up under the Apple? If after a long wait nothing happens shut it down and try again.
It's been a long wait.
I'll power down, unplug for 15 secs, and try again; this time holding the option key instead of the C key.
Mac OS X install DVDs take a long time to charge. In my iMac, it takes 5 minutes
here are the steps I've just taken:
1. when the computer restarted with the disk in, I ejected the disk.
2. I gave the command to restart the computer.
3. When the grey screen appeared, I inserted the disk, and held the option key.
4. The computer started and now shows the Mac OS X Install DVD screen as in the image I hope is in this message:
The first step could be skipped: you can insert the disk whenever you want. I can't see the image
I'm thinking I'll have to purchase a USB keyboard.
With the installation disk in, the computer thinks I'm trying to install OS X.
Any thoughts before I go out shopping?

That's what the install disc does, if the Mac is successfully booted from the disc, a USB keyboard won't change anything. What do you wish to do by booting from the install disc?
