I just bought a used iPod touch that was held out as 2d generation. Turns out it is not. My problem is that I cannot reach the iStore or get more episodes for my podcasts when I am using wifi. Any help for a technical novice?

I purchased a used iPod touch advertised as 2d generation. I later found that it is first generation. I can use the device for my limited purposes but only when connected to my desktop. For some reason that I can't figure out, I am unable to download "more episodes" for my podcasts or otherwise connect to the iStore when using my wifi connection. Can anyone provide a fix for this problem. Note that my technical skill level is about 3 on a scale of 10.
