Hard drive Recovery

I recently updated my MacBook to Snow Leopard and backed up all my info to a external hard drive before doing so. I drug the Hard Drive over to copy it on the external hard drive. Once updating was done, I tried dragging the old hard drive on the desk top, but none of my info was on the external hard drive under the copied hard drive icon. How do I recover my info from the old hard drive?
