I don't have Disk Warrior, but do I need it if I can run an archive and install?

From reading other discussions, its seems to me that my problem may be a failing HD in which case the sooner I get my information backed up the better.

I have no external drive or another computer. I think I may have to stop using this computer's Safari in the Recovery/Disk Utilities mode until I get my files backed up.

There is no way you can reformat the drive and save anything unless you make a backup first. You need an external hard drive with sufficient capacity to store all of your Home folder.

Drive Preparation and Installation

1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

I upgraded to Lion using the Mac Apps Store download shortly after it was released last year.

My computer's original disc software is Leopard 10.5.4.

I tried using the Lion Disk Utility through the Command-R startup method [which also allows me access to the internet with limited Safari use}, but this resulted in the 'Invalid sibling link" message when trying to repair the disk.

The Disk Utility will not allow me to run a "Repair Permissions" because the button is inactive [greyed/faded out].

I just tried to back up files with a blank DVD-R but the drive will not mount, and it just gets ejected after a few seconds.

You recommend I try to partition with my original computer software Leopard 10.5.4 — RATHER than using the Lion Disk Utility [via the internet] to partition my disk?

Sorry, I did not remember you were using Lion:

I had the invalid sibling link on both my iBook and backup external drive. Tech Tools determined that the back up drive's directory had a 5 file difference between the original directory and the rebuilt one. I rebuilt the back up drive directory using Tesh Tools and everything was fine on it. Not so with the iBook drive. It showed 1,000's of files were different between the original directory and the proposed "rebuilt directory". I ran a surface scan of the using Tech Tools on the iBook internal drive and it revealed a bad block and the only remedy for that is to reformat the drive. I booted up the external back up drive, reformatted the iBook internal drive and then cloned the entire back up drive back to the iBook. Reformatting will "label" the bad block so it will not be used. Problem solved.

While researching the problem, I did not see anyone reporting or even looking at the possibility of directory issues arising from a bad block on the drive. That is why I mentioned my particular "fix" and to promote the use of backup solutions.
