Use 2011 iMac 27" as external monitor for winPC with GTX 580-1 x mini hdmi and 2 x dvi outputs

I have a custom built PC with a GTX 580 which has a mini HDMI output as well as to DVI outputs. I don't care about sound as I have speakers, I just want to use the 27" as a monitor for my Windows PC.

Some people say you need a mini dp cable end to end and that having adaptors/converters on the end of an HDMI cable won't work. Some people say it will work just fine.

Who has a definitive answer?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Unless your PC has Thunderbolt output there is no way to use the iMac as an external monitor on a 2011 iMac. If you had a 2009 or 2010 27" iMac you could use the MiniDisplay port and that would work. Please carefully read both Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs & Target Display Mode 2011 Macs.

Hi,

For those having difficulties connecting iMac late 2009 using MDP to a PC - check and tripple check that you have the option of extending your windows desktop onto the 'second' screen that appears under display properties (in windows 7 on your PC).

Somehow this option had been switched off in Windows 7 and therefore once the 'USB-like' noise comes from the PC the iMac would indicate it is connecting under Display Properties under Windows but ONLY temporary (a coupld of seconds at most) before the iMac will disable Target Display Mode and revert back to OS X.....

I had to VERY quickly choise the 'extend desktop onto this display' and hit apply to keep the iMac from flashing a blue/black screen before the 'USB-like' noise from the PC.

I hope that makes sense - but this is for all those people who are following at the other brilliant steps and still struggling
