Sorry to throw water on your fire ... I wish it was that simple, but, turning on Genius is not the solution for me.  I already have Genius running - have had it running since it was first introduced.  Still have the interrupted preview problem.

It has now been over one month since this problem began... still not a single word from Apple. So much for the famous customer service. There is an amazing array of user solutions to this problem.. some creative some goofy and most or all ineffective... Why doesn't Apple just reply and settle the matter.. iTunes is clearly not working well right now (for me downloads are erratic, doesn't sync with my Nano anymore) and needs attention. Hello-- Apple... Apple? Where are you?

    1. Use these DNS: Google and Verizon DNS
    Primary DNS = 8.8.8.8 Secondary DNS = 4.2.2.1

    2. Then apply these instructions:

    Windows XP

    1. On the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Open field type cmd and click OK.
    3. In the resulting window, type ipconfig /flushdns and press Return(Enter) on the keyboard.
    4. You should see a message that the DNS Resolver Cache has been successfully flushed.

    Windows Vista and Windows 7

    1. On the Start menu, point to All Programs > Accessories and then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator from the shortcut menu. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
    2. In the resulting window, type ipconfig /flushdns and press Return(Enter) on the keyboard.
    3. You should see a message that the DNS Resolver Cache has been successfully flushed.

Your problem should be 100% solved

Please stop spreading this voodoo nonsense about DNS. It is emphatically NOT related to DNS.

Actually before I attempt to change the DNS I thought it has nothing to do with my problem, but after I did change the DNS, it solved my problem.

My ISP is : Verizon Fios.

    blame Apple don't blame me.

I have been monitoring these threads and tried all the voodoo solutions as well!  Ha aha.  Lets get some specs out there and see what the common element are.

    Me:

    Windows 7 64bit

    Itunes (latest update just installed)

    ISP Verizon Fios

Tried running off LAN and wireless, still an issue

I also have an itunes plugin installed to find Duplicate songs

My only connection (timing wise) is that this thing started happening shortley after I installed Skype.

This did not work for me.  I have Windows XP.  So why would it work for Jose and for Jimmer07 but not for me?  BTW, my ISP is Comcast Cable.

I think that with anything like this we have to be aware that the fix may just be a coincidence.  Someone makes a change and it works and they assume that it was the change they made that made the difference.

One thing you can test for though is if it is reproducible and the DNS name change is clearly reproducible.  I'm not sure why it works for some and not others.  There may be multiple issues in play here.  By the way, my ISP is Rogers (Canada) and I have heard that Rogers doesn't have the best DNS server.

As soon as I removed Comcast's DNS servers and used Google's (8.8.8.8), I can now preview entire songs as expected (instead of being cut off at 7 seconds).

And it could, and apparently IS related to DNS. It makes sense since the app is likely using DNS to resolve the IP address of the servers responsible for streaming the music. It's hard to imagine the application NOT using DNS in some way or another.

In my case anyway, it's a Comcast issue and not an Apple issue.

Of course the streaming uses DNS, but it uses it ONE TIME at the start. As soon as the music starts streaming, DNS is out of the picture, its job done.  A Typical DNS entry is configured to be valid for days at a time, with the absolute minimum length of time an entry remains valid at about 5 minutes. Given that the maximum preview length is 90 seconds, there's just no way that a) iTunes is making multiple DNS look ups to stream a preview and b) a lookup that was valid at the start of the preview becomes invalid 10 seconds in.

What IS possible is that a side effect of flushing the DNS resolver cache is that open sockets get closed, the IP lease gets renewed, or something similar that does in fact make a difference in some cases.  But as you can see, many many people here report that flushing the DNS cache does nothing (myself included) so that cannot possibly be the answer.
