Highlight the drive and select "Get Info" from either a right click or the menu bar.

At the bottom of the information window, what are the permissions set at? Read only?

If so, set permissions for your user name at read/write.

Click the padlock at the bottom, below the permissions list block.

After that, click the "+", add your user name and set the permissions for your user name to Read/Write.

Then, click the "gear" next to the +- box and select "apply to enclosed items" and then "OK" from the drop down window.

Lock the padlock and all should be fine.

Thanks, found it. I think there may be a problem though as it already says read and write and when I click the + it just spins the beach ball then closes the window. Have tried a few times.. Thought something was wrong as I've re installed a few times and the same hard drive worked fine. I have tried my USB flash drive and when I copy to that I get an error "cannot copy as an un expected error occurred" I am currently trying to update the software via software update. I'll try again after that and

Report back. Thanks

No. It is an admin account. but I do not see the lock. At the bottom I just see this: Sharing& permissions.

But it is not a link There are just these words. I can not open it. when I click them nothing happens.

i sow the picture that you shared. My page is the same, expect I have no lock sighn and I have no + to add anything.

I do not have setting sighn at the bottom as well.

It is all about format

format HFS works only on mac

format NTFS works only on pc

format FAT32 works on both

so, You need to change the external hard drive formats to a format that mac can read it

at the first copy all the information from external hard drive to some where else (otherwise you will lose them because when you change the format you eraise every thing)

then connect your external hard drive to mac

go to applications on the right hand of finder page

go to Utilities 9about end of the page)

go to disk utility

choose the hard drive from right side of the new window

click on the second tab(eraise)

change the format to FAT (I think this is easier to use a common format between both pc and mac)

then you will eraise all the information by formating

then connect external hard drive to your pc and copy last information.

now you can past them on mac or pc

Fat format has a limitation. you can not copy and past a folder bigger than 4 G. for example if you have afolder named videoes 2012, and this is a 12G folder you can not copy the folder. you can copy all the files from folder and paste them to hard drive, move them to mac and when you past them on mac you can mae your big folder(videoes 2012) again.

this limitation is only about this format, but I think it is easier to have a format for both pc and mac.

I cannot copy to my external USB hard drive after reinstall
