Insufficient rights to run program

I have a new iMac so I'm just learning this operating system. I set up 4 user accounts - two of them are for my children. I'm set up as the administrator.

I downloaded the 30 day trial of Inspiration v8 from www.inspiration.com. It works fine for me. When I logged out and my daughter logged in, it said she had insufficient user rights to run the program. Is only the person who installed programs on the Mac authorized to use them? Any idea of what to do?

Thanks,

Rick Brenner

Gunnar,

Thanks for the response. In the ownership and permissions option under GET INFO I gave read and write access to all users for all the folders and subfolders for the application as well as the executable. Not sure what else to do. Monday I'll call Inspiration.

I installed MacWord and it gives access to all users, so I'm not sure why this only only gives access to the person who installed it. Strange.

Rick

You didn't mention setting up any parental controls for each user so I'm assuming you didn't do so.

As administrator, you can set up specific limitations or access to specific applications on each of the non-administrator user accounts via your Accounts Panel in System Preferences.

On the panel, select your daughter's account. Click on "parental controls". Then select "configure" for "finder.app & system". After a short load period various apps will be listed. Simply check the app in question as well as any other application you want her to access. Also, select "simple finder" if you do not want her having access to the finder.

Please post back with results.

I downloaded the trial and checked it out. It is not a file permission problem inside the application folders. I'd email the developer that their application is useless without administration privileges, therefore it is useless for you and your kids.
It's an issue caused by bad programming and bad quality assurance.

Sorry to hear that. Seems like help from the software developer is your only recourse.

Administration rights allows access to files in the computer best left out of other's reach. Beyond the immediate problem, I suggest establishing specific user limitations for each user account other than your own. This way, each user's computer needs are met while ensuring the integrity of the system. BTW, in the Account panel, Parental>>> "simple finder" is definitely the way to go.

it's a big issue to figure out the appropriate balance of access to the Internet, Google, eMail, Chat, etc. to enable them to get the benefits without exposing them to the pitfalls.

As you may have noticed on the Sys. Preference Accounts panel, you can create specific criteria for e-mail (if you're using Apple's Mail), iChat and Safari. Of course, the emotional dynamics of explaining to a child why they can or cannot access certain content or people is something way beyond these forums. 😉
