My iPhoto requires an update to work but when I update it there is an error.

Hello,

I’m having problems with my iPhoto. I used to have the iLife of ’09 (which I believe is version 8.0). I recently updated my macbook pro from 10.6.8 to 10.7.2 then through Software Update I updated my mac to 10.7.4. I’m not sure if the update effected my iPhoto or not because I never checked it. I then updated my iLife to that of '11. My GarageBand and iMovie worked fine but every time I clicked on iPhoto it wouldn’t open. Instead I would get a little textbox saying:

“In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version.

Please run Software Update to install it now.”

I couldn’t even view iPhoto’s settings or anything. I knew that iPhoto had updated only because I would go to Applications then click on iPhoto’s Get info, which would tell me that I have the 9.0 version (iLife of ’11). So I proceeded to update my iPhoto through Software Update but just as it neared completion the update would stop and I would get a textbox saying:

“The update “iPhoto Update” can’t be installed. The update could not be expanded and may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that software Update runs”

I have tried everything I have read on iLife Troubleshooting Basics (even though it only fixes iLife '08 and '09 because I can't seem to find fixes for '11) http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As a Test:

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

I did as you said but instead of a menu a text box popped up that said:

“In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version.

Please run Software Update to install it now.”

Will I have to re-buy iLife? or would I have to wait till Macbook version 10.8.0 comes out? I have all my pictures saved in an external hard drive so...

No you don't have to rebuy iPhoto 11.

Try reinstall it.

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

2c: on 10.7 they're at

/private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

I followed the instructions for the mac version 10.7 and deleted every file that said iphoto in it. I even deleted the files concerning my iLife of '09. After I did all this I clicked on iPhoto and was told the same thing:

“In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version.

Please run Software Update to install it now.”

I clicked on update. Just as it was nearly finished this text box popped up, like all other times I've tried to update iPhoto:

“The update “iPhoto Update” can’t be installed. The update could not be expanded and may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that software Update runs.”

I dont want to rebuy iPhoto *sigh* Everything else in my iLife is working great... it's just iPhoto with this problem.

It's my uncle's iLife. He gave it to me and it's working fine for him. Buying it wont fix it? As in nothing will? O.o

Oh? So you wouldn't be *sighing* and buying it again, would you? You'd be buying it for the first time.

One advantage to actually buying it on the App Store is that you will get the latest version, and not one in need of an update. Plus, if there is a problem with that you'll be entitled to App Store support.

I saw this on another thread and it worked for me. I skipped step 1, since I already had 9.0 installed.

1. I re-installed iPhoto from original Mac Applications Install Disk. Couldn't skip this step because my installed iPhoto wouldn't even be recognized by the upgrade made on step 2;

2. Downloaded and run latest available iPhoto version from Apple website, which was version 9.1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1322)

3. iPhoto launched perfectly and immediately pointed to another available upgrade: version 9.1.1;

4. Made the new upgrade. iPhoto now works perfectly. Good news: my Library was intact.

I had a similar issue. the only difference was that after iphoto told me that it needed the update, my software update menu wasnt showing anything available.

my troubleshoot was to resintall iLife first. that didnt do it, so i just left lika that and downloaded the updates manualy. voila' , problem solved.

Similar issue. I just installed iPhoto from the iLife 11 set (which I bought and paid for, thank you very much). Tried to open it and got the "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version.

Please run Software Update to install it now" message.

Rand software updater, restarted the iMac, tried to open iPhoto, and got the same error message.

Downloaded the update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1322 and installed it.

All is good now.
