And I just checked my credit card, no holds, no strange activity. everything is fine. I copied the info from my credit card web site into my billing info. Is this getting more and more common with iTunes? I remember when you had no problem buying a song or an album.

Try this..
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar click iTunes > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Click: Reset warnings and Reset Cache
Click OK.
See if that made a difference.

Now it is saying my securty code is invalid. I copied all my contact info from my credit card web site and made sure it was all correct. Never had this much trouble trying to get a company to take my money.

The folks at Apple Support says that I have to enter everything just like on my billing statement. No problem, I just copied and paste from web site to iTunes, execpt for the zip. My zip code in my credit card info has five numbers, iTunes adds the other four, so it does not match. How can I take that off. Also how can I get my issue escalated. It seems like they are just reading off of a script and not doing anything to fix it.
Still not working. Put in the info from my credit card, it takes the dashes out of the phone and add four digits to my zip code so it does not match what I have on record with my credit card company. Five days unable to buy anything, tech support has stopped responding to my emails. So does anyone have any ideas.

Nope, but did get better response by opening a complaint with the Better Business Bureual about Apple's lack of support. Got much better support when they found out.
I'm having the same issue, it's been a week now! Ugh it's really annoying
I was having this exact issue when I was set up to use PayPal as my payment method. I fixed it by -
1. going to my iTunes account and selecting None as my method of payment, then clicking Done
2. confirming this on my account page - which then said Add (or Set up, I can't remember) a Credit Card
3. on the Add a credit card page, I again set up the exact same PayPal account I had before.
4. I was then taken to the PayPal website to confirm that I wanted to use my PayPal account for iTunes purchases, and finally
5. I was taken back to my account page in iTunes, which looked exactly the same as before BUT...
The next time I tried it, my purchase went straight through! (And this was less than 5 minutes after I'd had the "Credit Card processing is temporarily unavailable" message.)
YMMV, but I guess a similar revalidation process would work for credit cards too.
