DVCPRO HD 1080i 24p question

I see that FCP 5 does not support DVCPRO HD 1080i 24p yet.
We want to shoot some stock footage with our HVX200
at 1080 and not 720p. I have tried the 1080i 30p setting but it looks to much like the video look we are trying to avoid. So if I shoot 1080i 24p and import from my P2 card, could I extract 24p segments from Motion or After Effects??

Not as far as I know. Motion isn't designed for that. And I don't think it is an option in AE...but I don'g know for sure. I only have 6.5...7 is now out.

Anyway...if you did extract the frames...then what? You can't edit it in FCP. You can't export it out of AE to tape.

And from what I know, that camera is 720P native...the 1080 image is just a blow up of the 720p image recorded. I figure that with some sort of capture card you could shoot 720p24, then use the card to upconvert it on your output to 1080p24...if whatever medium you want to deliver on accepts that format.

Contrary to the other opinions here, there is a vast difference between 1080 and 720 from the HVX. It is not a 720p native camera, but rather uses spatial offsetting/pixel shifting to get more out of a 1/3" CCD. It's about on par with any of the other 1/3" CCD cameras, with an effective resolution of 1440x810. The technical details are here:

The lack of real 1080/24p support is really a bummer, and I'm crossing my fingers that Apple will support it post-haste.

Sorry, the Panasonic HVX200 is most definately a Progressive camera - the images are sampled at 1080/60p directly off the CCD's and then converted into whatever format you are shooting. The sony Z1 and Canon HL1 use interlaced chips. JVC HD100 uses progressive chips as well @ 720p. The 1080 mode of the HVX uses the 24p in a 1080i streem.

If you want true progressive through the pipeline, 720 is the way to go. I also would like 1080i/24pa support in FCP as well. Panasonic modified the format for this camera which is why few programs support the mode in DVCproHD. Canopus Edius does support DVCproHD 1080i/24pa.

In terms of image quality, there is about 150-200 lines of resolution difference between the 1080 & 720 modes of the HVX. I own one and have personally seen the difference in resolution.

For 1080i, it is very similar to how panasonic and canon treated 24p in 480i streem DV footage. 24pn over 60i is best used when you want to edit the footage in a 60i streem. Say you wanted 24p footage and 60i footage together (like a doc or sports program). 24pA is best used when you would like to edit @ 24 frames. Say you were doing a inde film and you want to do a film out. 24pA over a 60i streem can easily be extracted out to the 24 individual frames removing the extra ones.

In 720p mode, you can do 24p over 60frames progressive or in the HVX case, they have a 24pN mode that only records the 24 frames per sec and saves you space on the P2 cards. -> no frame extraction necessary. The varicam always does 24p over 60frames because it goes to tape.

Here is the ultimate guide to the HVX & DVX cameras:
