What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen

If your Mac, iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should do in advance - before you lose it or it's stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

It pays to be proactive by following the advice on using Find My Phone before you lose your device:

No the iPhone uses cell towers and wifi for locating you

That is not correct. All iPhones other than first generation have GPS. AGPS uses cell towers and wifi for a rough location, then GPS for a precise location. Read the iPhone technical specificaitons on wikipedia.

GPS is receive-only to fix position, so a data connection is required for iCloud to get the phone's location.

Did you even read the article that you linked?

It clearly explains that iphones have GPS and can use wi-fi or cell towers to get a location when the GPS cannot access the satellite. It is also provides additional info to help the GPS get a location more quickly.

You should really read the links you provide.

My iPhone 4S was stolen a month ago after I had barely had it for a year. It had everything installed including "find my iPhone" and iCloud, etc.... what Apple does not tell you is that these location services are useless if you are dealing with experienced thieves who know exactly what to do... Despite Apple being technically able to deactivate the phone instantly (provided you can give them a police report number and the phone's serial number) they REFUSE to do so and claim they "have no program" for such an event.

Oh and btw: LAPD classifies the theft of an iPhone as petty theft and as such will not do a thing about it - 'we don't do iPhones" I was told...

How does it help you to know where your phone is via GPS?

My iPhone 4S was snatched/stolen by thugs with no life today. I called the Police and it was already switched off. The good thing is that I had a Passcode which makes it difficult for these silly boys to access my data. Even the police tried to use Find My iPhone but this was not possible. I also called my service provider and they suspended my account with immediate effect, and they mentioned that as they have blocked the handset, no one can use it anymore. I wonder if this is possible because I believe thugs can do anything to use the phone again. Anywhere, I feel sorry because pple have to work hard to have good phones and some idiots just come and snatch your phone just like that. Its rather sad because the service provider will make you pay for the Line rental until you are due for another upgrade. Sadly, that I never bother to take any insurance though. I was left with six months to upgrade and I have to pay £278 until my upgrade is due in October 2013. I wonder if an IME can be changed by these thugs, if not, I assume one can locate their iPhone even if they are abroad, I might be wrong on this, advice on this if you can.
