gmail email account will not connect to smtp

I have had my phone for ages and all of a sudden it will not connect to my work gmail account. It's telling me my user name or password is incorrect and even thought I make sure, shut the phone down and restart it, it still says the same. When I delete and try to set it up again it tells me can not connect to imap - help!
