May 28, 2012 4:57 AM in response to harmeetappleby Menneisyys,You shouldn't stream. It seems it's the H.264 level that iTunes has problems with (it should be under 4.2; yours is most probably 4.2 or 5.1).
If you have a Mac, use Subler to quickly edit all the movie files in your iTunes library (you can directly edit those files in the file system, no need to import them any more). With Windows, this isn't that straightforward / fast but still much better than streaming.
There is a tutorial explaining this at http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/making-stock-videos-application-play-every-mp4 -files-possible ; make sure you follow the "Subler" link at the bottom.

May 28, 2012 6:01 AM in response to harmeetappleby Menneisyys,Did you read the article I linked to? Have you tried H264 Level Editor by CoolSoft? If it's far too slow, do you have a friend with a Mac, where you could quickly make all your MP4's iPad-compliant with the Mac-only Subler?

May 29, 2012 2:25 AM in response to harmeetappleby Menneisyys,GoodPlayer can play back MP4 files from hardware. The main advantage of GoodPlayer (and any other player using hardware decoding) that, unlike the iTunes + stock Video apps combo, it's not sensitive to the H.264 level.
You only need to keep two things in mind:
- it can't play back protected stuff (any video you purhcase from iTunes store, EXCEPT for music videos)
- you'll need to manually transfer videos to it via iTunes File Sharing (it's under the Apps tab in iTunes)

May 29, 2012 3:31 AM in response to harmeetappleby Menneisyys,As they can't be synched to Videos, I presume your videos aren't from iTunes Store.
1, purchase GoodPlayer
2, synch it to your iPad
3, go to the Apps tab of the ipad in iTunes and select GoodPlayer from the list at the bottom left
4, open the directory where your files are located
5, drag the file(s) to the bottom right list (titled "GoodPlayer") in iTunes
6, wait for the transfer to finish
7, fire up GoodPlayer on the iPad and start playback.

May 29, 2012 5:57 AM in response to harmeetappleby Coppertiger,Toplay mp4 files through iTunes under Home sharing do the following:-
Connect your ipad to your laptop using the supplied 30 pin to usb cable - make sure your ipad has at least 50% charge before you start. (You can do it via wifi but if youwant to transfer any film files while you do this, then it could take some time depending on your network wifi speed)
When iTunes opens go to the main Menu - 'Edit' and select preferences. Under the General tab make sure your library name is displayed and all source locations are ticked.
under Sharing tab ensure 'share my library on my local network' is ticked and the bulletet choice 'share entire Library' is selected.
Leave the 'require password' box underneath unticked.
(parental tab - ensure no boxes are ticked and the click lock to prevent further changes is in open position. - just so I know this is not having an impact if things do not go according to plan).
Advanced tab - check theat the media folder location is given as the default, normally c:\Users\[your user account]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media or similar depending on op system - the end three folders should be Music\iTunes\ItunesMedia - this makes it easy for the next selection to avoid duplication of data on your hard drive.
'keep iTunes media Folder organised' leave unticked - allows you\windows to manage your content.
'Copy files to itunes Media Folder when adding to library' have ticked - except if you are handling large music libraries and disk space is a premium (ie several hundred or thousands of songs - if so leave this unticked too).
(Note below - some items are automatically added regardless of this setting, others, such as Music and Pictures will be handled from their default folder locations on your PC and will only be added under the iTunes Media Folder if this option is ticked.)
Back to iTunes main Menu and Select Store - ensure you have authorised your Computer
Then under Menu item 'Advanced', ensure Home Sharing is turned on.
Now go to your ipad and under Settings\General, select Restrictions. If you run with restrictions off, that's fine. If it is on, then navigate to the Allowed Content section and ensure everything is set to maximum permissable content settings, ie 18+ Movies etc and explicit content,
Now go to settings\Video and ensure the Home sharing section is displaying your Apple ID - the same as the one you authorised Homesharing for on your iTunes on your PC. (If you have more than one ID)
How you want your content to be managed for Home sharing will now depend on your syncig options.
Click on your ipad icon in iTunes so the Summary page is displayed.
On the Summary page scroll to the bottom and look in 'Options'.
Ticks should be in all items except for 'Manually Manage' (6th) and 'Sync only ticked songs and videos (3rd)'
For reference note that if you ever have 'Manually Manage' set in the future, and then remove the tick - the operation once applied and synced will remove all managed content in Music and Videos from your ipad - use this function with care. It is however a good way of clearing out your ipad file system for these two items if you want to start again - or to make backing up and restore ops a little easier if troubleshooting... :)
Now open the Film tab (on same line as Summary, Info, Aps etc) Ensure no tick is in sync Films
If ever you want to have a film on your pad so that you can view whenever - then put tick in this box - make sure 'Automatically include' is not ticked and put a tick in the box of the film you wish to sync. Click Apply and the film will be transferred to your pad.
With these options set as is, (without the sync option set) then connecting by wifi will allow access to your libraries for streaaming your media, without having the media on your ipad. With selected items synced, you will still be able to stream when connected through a supported wifi or cable - to save space on yur pad if your total collections are too largee to manage just from one location.
Now go to iTunes menu item 'File' and click 'Add File to Library' browse to the location of your mp4 file and click it to select it, and then 'Open' at bottom of page. This will transfer your file to your library. Open Video App on ipad, click on your Shared library icon and then select your mp4 file - when it loads it will display a media type info page - if it is playable (mine was when i tested) click play button and it will load and play.
If you have an item synced to your pad already - then when you open your Video App there will be two tabs at the top of the page marked 'Movies' and 'Shared' this allow you to have media on your ipad to view whenever and enables you to connect to your media library when connected either by cable or wifi - either on home network, or as I often do, by an adhoc connection when I am away from home and have my laptop with me as well - I only have a 16gb pad so this adhoc thing is invaluable to me.
Please note that even if you can stream the mp4 file it does not necessarily mean it can be loaded on to the pad - this is because Movies are organised in the iTunes Library in Folder containers and your mp4 file is in raw file format.

Glad it worked! If File Sharing doesn't work for you, this way, you can transfer movies.
Try clicking the "Apps" tab when the iPad is connected. Do you see "GoodPlayer" at the bottom left list?
