My phone only makes noise when someone is calling, it doesn't play music out loud or ring when I get a text. It also has nothing to do with the mute switch on the side, I've flipped it on and off and nothing works. Any ideas???

What happens if the notification sound is changed to something different? Do you get a different result?
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Have all of these been tried?
All of the notification sounds just vibrate whenever I change them but when I change my actual ringtone they work just fine.
Try basic troubleshooting.
