How do I watch an .mpg file?
How do I watch an .mpg file? Not supported by Quick Time Player. Is there a conversion program to some other format?
Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You can try another player such as VLC
http://vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com/mac
and/or install Perian which will add extra codecs to Quicktime

It's a matter of choice, but both don't go astray.
Good Luck

Wouldn't bother with Perian, the developers have abandoned it.
I realise it is going to Open Source but still a very handy product at present as is Flip4Mac

especially for all those who choose to use Quicktime, which I still find one of the more powerful programs I use. As I said before, each to their own. I keep VLC in Applications but rarely need to use it.
Cheers

Thanks will try either or both of these.
On another note, Aperture is able to import the .mpg file but not able to read it. I would like to be able to import in a format that can be read by Aperture and stored permanently.
Perian just works for everybody else. Check your settings and check the movie file itself. Do not disregard Apple QuickTime on Softies advice. He is strangely anti Apple for a supposed Apple expert. See if the file opens in VLC and that the file is not corrupt.

I am neither for nor against Apple, or any other company.
I am for things that work, against things that don't; I'm for helping people get things related to Apple computers work the way they want them to work, not the way Apple deems they ought to work.
In other words, I'm for freedom of choice, and against authoritarianism.

I don't use Aperture for videos, but there are video formats/codecs iPhoto and iMovie cannot deal with (and Aperture may be on that list as well); have you tried this: download MPEG Streamclip (free); if you are on SL as indicated, you would also need the MPEG2 Playback Component available from the Apple store for around $20 (this component is included in Lion). You can then drag your video into the MPEG Streamclip window and choose export to a format Mac OS (and its applications) can deal with.
Download the free VLC Player from here:
Plays just about everything, including mpg, without add ons.
Pete, I downloaded Flip4Mac but Quicktime will still not read the .mpg file. What do I have to do to make it work?
Thanks, Tim
This is why I never recommend QuickTime...VLC (as the Mac people say) "just works"... 🙂
