how can i make spreadsheets? Do i need to buy a different program for mac?

Start the Mac App Store program and look for the program "Numbers". It's a pretty good spreadsheet program for $20 us

In addition to Capt Fred's excellent suggestion, there's also a free app called OpenOffice, which will open Word & Excel docs, and save in those formats as well. Check it out.
