Please consider providing a little more detail around your particular intended VPN usage, and requirements.

A discussion here can depend on whether you control the target VPN server involved, or whether you're operating with a particular required VPN protocol, what sort of VPN security is expected here (which can be determined by how tenancious the attackers might choose to be; on the value of the information involved), whether you're planning to use one of the integrated VPN protocols and clients or some sort of add-on, etc.

Your footer indicates iPad, but your question is posted an OS X forum. Are you working with OS X, or with an iOS device? Or connecting from an iPad to a particular OS X Server (or other) system?

Here is a VPN-related posting from yesterday with some general information on VPNs, and that might serve as a starting point for your consideration.

Dear Mrhofmann,

I would like to break in to this conversation and purely interested with VPN...I have a MBP and TC at home from time to time, I would like to take my MBP away and have secure internet access anywhere...Hence the question about VPN. I don't like using other SSID due to them being less secure.

Please can you clarify what I need in terms of Hardware, software to achieve this?

MBP-John: Time Capsule is capable of what is called a pass-through of a VPN, but it does not contain a VPN server. In other words, a Time Capsule cannot be the end-point of a VPN.

If you're considering setting up a VPN end-point, that's possible and probably easier to use one of the virtual host providers around and not your own link and network; this is known as a hosted VPN server, and there are various options available. (A web search should locate various providers, and there are packages that allow you to implement your own server on your own hosting provider.)

Please start your own thread for your own (different) question here, and please indicate what you are connecting into; into an OS X Server on your own local network, or a hosted VPN server, or something else.
