Rectangular splash screen box says it's updating a different event every attempt at startup. Spinning ball. never ends. have to force quit it and start over. can't do anything in the program. what is going on and how do I remedy it?

Yuck, sounds like it doesn't like a specific project or event. I would try hiding all events and projects, and then add them back one by one to figure out which one is causing the issue.

I dont know how your excellent tip (complete with handy link to instructions - thank you!) failed to fix this, but the events I put in the hidden folder still show up in the "Updating" death spiral.
