How to reformat iPod 5th Gen. 30GB from Windows to Mac

I have an old 5th Gen iPod that is currently formatted for Windows for my Dell PC. I now have a Macbook Pro. I would like to know if it is possible to reformat the iPod to MAC??

If so, will this enable me to sync all of my songs on my iPod with my new Macbook Pro?

I no longer have my old PC with all the songs I purchased over the years. I only have them on my iPod.

My problem is that my iPod will currently not sync the old songs onto the Macbook.

If I do a reset I will lose everything on the iPod and I do not want to do that because I will lose songs that I cannot get back without repurchasing.

Help

iPod (5th generation), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Yes. Restore it in iTunes. This will convert the iPod's file system format from FAT32 (Windows) to Mac OS Extended Journaled (Mac).

No. A restore wipes all content from the device. However, a Mac can read a Windows formatted iPod. So before restoring your iPod in iTunes, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
